Self-Imposed December Art Challenge

As my school semester winds down and I look to nearly a month of days left open to simply play, I decided I need to find something constructive and creative to do with my time.

I spend a good deal of time over at ColourLovers.com, playing with colors and palettes and patterns. I am going to work through a weekly challenge. First, finding an image that inspires me and then creating a palette from that picture. With that, I am going to create something. No other criteria.

Just a handful of colors and a studio full of mixed media treasures.

Week One Inspiration: A coral reef.

Thanksgiving Day

Somewhere along the line I inherited the Thanksgiving holiday.

I've got everything cooking that I can have cooking right now, and was able to sneak into the studio for a bit of time with string and beads and secret Christmas gift making while the rest of the family is yet to arrive.

The first scents of roasting duck and turkey are beginning to fill the house, and usually it would compliment the smell of earlier pie baking, but we took a shortcut this year and purchased our pies ready made.

Hazelnut coffee with a splash of cream in hand I head to a big chair to curl into for some stitching. I have renewed my vow to myself to have at least three new designs out a month, and am pleased with my progress so far. The 'busywork' side of the business leaves me without the energy sometimes to stitch, but I am coming at it from a different angle now, looking at my creating as just that. Creating. I should be taking as much pleasure in stitching the models for the new designs as I do in drawing them in the first place, and I find myself returning to that place where I can hole up for hours and just lose myself in a piece.

It isn't work.

And that feels good.

After thinking about what I wanted to accomplish with my blog/art journal/inspiration collection, I decided that I would move myself over here to Blogspot as I wanted a place to write about all that I do as an artist.

And so here I am.

I am an artist.

I dabble. I discover and develop those things that come into my head often in the wee hours when sleep suddenly evades me and I find myself at my desk drawing thumbnails. (And sometimes it takes me just as long a few hours later when I do get up to start my day just what I was thinking!)

I am fascinated by color. By texture and fibers and fabrics.

My favorite art supply is still the crayon.

Here I hope to scribble.
