a spin on paint by numbers

My Grandma Lorraine taught me a lot of things. I learned how to crochet by watching her, but never hooked as tightly as she did. I still wonder how she ever got the hook through the stitches on the return row. I sat with a skein of yarn and chained. And chained. Until I had this ginormous pile of chained stitch at my feet.  Red wool.

My first experience as an embroiderer and cross stitcher was with her. I still tied knots in my embroidery floss back then and never understood why I had all these bumps coming through the front of the piece. It was her patient hand that showed me how to tuck the ends.

She also made these amazing braided rugs, made from strips of wool from old clothing. I use to roll up the balls of wool strips as she cut them. She had one in the dining room under the table. It was huge, and I remember still to this day, nearly 40 years later, what it felt like under my feet.

Cross Stitch Pattern inspired by my Grandma's Paint By Numbers

She also did paint by numbers. I recently saw a painting kit at the craft store  and there was this wash of memory-- of sitting beside her at the dining room table, my toes wiggling against the wool rug underneath them as she popped open each of the little plastic paint jars.  And that itty bitty paintbrush. Tiny. And she would paint, dipping that brush and finding each number on the canvas board that corresponded with the number stamped on the flip lid of the wee paint jars. I wiggled in my seat, wanting to try it, too. She would let me, but only the places that were bigger.
She knew what she was doing, she did. I still color outside of the lines.

Lately, I find myself thinking a lot about the things she taught me. What an influence she had on the creative me. She was responsible for the foundation. She instilled in me a love for those things that were simple and real. A love for the things that are fashioned as much by your heart as they are your hand.

Pine #2

She has been gone from this place since 1976, but I still talk with her frequently. I feel her sometimes in the things that I create. Hand and heart.

Hoops and Stuff

Newest cross stitch design, just finished up over the weekend. 'Up North', stitched over two threads on Wichelt Imports hand-dyed jobelan, Twilight Mist-- one of their new yummy colors. DMC floss, easy stitch up, finishing at 74w x 176h.

And of course, what would the weekend be without a few more hoops?

Where Have I Been?

Well, I've been over at Tumblr....where I am really having a lot of fun, discovering new things and finding that there are  a lot of people that I can expose my work to that wouldn't otherwise find me!

But, I will try to keep up with this blog as well for those that have followed me here!

What have I been up to? Well, here are a few images...

Kaleidoscope

One block of what was supposed to be a quilt for a magazine that quit publishing.

The large focal block for the orginal quilt

Gingham Boughs from the new Twigs Collection

Heart of the Forest from the Twigs Collection

And on Etsy, some free form embroidery trees I have been working, hoop art

That's about all for now! Now off to work on the next of the Whiskerkins cats in cross stitch!

friday i wanna try this

As my daughter and I get ready to do some redecorating and touch our bohemian selves, I've been snurching ideas from various places. I'm finding I am really drawn to these window dressings and lampshades and sun catcher kind of things.

*~*

Finished up a new design and haven't had a chance to get it photographed or posted yet. It is the first in a series of simple trees (Not the celtic trees I've spoken of before) and I've titled it
Gingham Twigs.  Starting on another this weekend with an autumn feel to it.

Also charting a few more for the Whiskerkins Collection.

saturday splash

Feeling Green....and marveling, as I always do, over the colors that Nature gives us.

Sunday is shaping up to be a warm (although muddy!) day. I think I need to head out to the woods. There isn't a whole lot of green out there right now, but there is color and life and all those things that I need to connect with so that this restlessness might ease.

*~*
Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind,
Whose breath gives life to all the world.
Hear me; I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty,
and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.

Make my hands respect the things you have made
and my ears sharp to hear your voice
Make me wise so that I may understand
the things you have taught my people.
Help me to remain calm and strong
in the face of all that comes towards me.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.

Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others. Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me.

I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother,
but to fight my greatest enemy -Myself (My fears and my doubts).

Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset,
my spirit may come to you without shame.

Finished Mama Cat & her kittens of the Whiskerkins . If the sun comes out this morning, I'll try and get some shots of the finished piece. Starting Gingham Leaves in the meanwhile, using some of the colors that were pulled in the Design Seeds swatches above.

Happy Saturday!

more trees sprouting

Finished the unedited version of two new tree designs last night. I will be starting on the holiday one first. I'm still trying to get just the right color combination. I think I'll be making a stop at JoAnn's to grab some things this afternoon.

I need to score some more yarn as well. I've been taking my crochet with me when I'm off taking care of things and have some 'sit around and wait' time.

Blustery day today, would much rather stay in and play with string, but there's things to do.

Changing Seasons

Working through Changing Seasons.  I have tried something different in creating this piece. As I wanted a very organic feel to it, I have decided to let it occur, well, organically!  I have
my "skeleton" pattern to guide me, but I am stitching and listening very carefully to what it is saying to me. Branches have been changed, leaves and snow shaken free, and I have charted again.  There are limbs that have been changed three or four times as I've gone along, as if the wind caught them, bending them to its will or breaking them off.

The fabric has photographed very grey, it is actually one of Wichelt Imports hand dyed 28ct. jobelans, Thyme, stitched over two threads. As of right now, I am planning on working in Kreinik #4 braids to give a bit of depth.  I also added a border, but that too might change as I already have a few things in mind that I think would fit just a smidge better with what I am trying to achieve.

Now off to put down the last of the branches and then, I believe I will start with autumn!

sketching with pen and campfire charcoal

Finally got around to scanning some of the sketches I did on our camping weekend.  I doodled with fine point pen and also with charcoal left from the campfire.

Campfire Charcoal drawing

Another pen drawing

Campfire Charcoal Hands

These two were exercises in trying to do a drawing without lifting my pen from the paper.

old trees and fabulous fungus

He is a kind old tree, as his face will tell you. Sentinel of the river valley, watcher of the wood.

His arms gnarled, his skin wrinkled, but what wisdom he holds. Secrets kept within, shared only with those that would listen very closely to the telling and promise to keep the tales safe.

The oyster mushrooms clinging, providing an odd little staircase, perhaps, for the fae folk to climb up into the arms of their old friend for one more story before day would come.

north dakota stitching

After working on some free form embroidery on our camping trip, I brought along some fabric and floss for the trip to North Dakota this last weekend and spent some of my time in the passenger seat stitching this.  I'm working the piece in three strands of cotton floss on 28ct. jobelan.  I am creating as I go, so I really have no idea how this is going to turn out or just how far I am going to push it. I suppose that it will tell me when it is done.

I also spent some time today editing the Changing Seasons cross stitch design and hope to get started stitching this weekend.  I am also working on the last of the stitched blocks for the quilt design I am submitting to Irish Quilting Magazine. I am shooting for a September 30th finish for that piece.

It is very strange not having my boy here. Tossing myself into a serious creative stream is helping me adjust, but tonight I am very aware that he is not here. Yeah, yeah. I know its only been a handful of days, time makes it easier, I get that. Just not tonight.
